Based on the feedback, experiences with the system have been mainly positive. The majority of laundry room users did not encounter any issues. However, some respondents experienced challenges in accessing the laundry facilities. In most cases, the system provider’s customer service was able to resolve these issues quickly over the phone.

An exception was the property at Paulankatu 2, where the laundry room locking system was temporarily out of order and updating the lock unfortunately took a long time. However, this issue was not related to the pilot project.

Many respondents appreciated that no one else could access the facilities during a reserved time slot. As a result, the washing machines were empty at the start of each reservation, and the risk of abuse was reduced. In properties where the drying room was also included in the pilot, laundry was collected more promptly after drying.

The majority of respondents hoped that the electronic reservation system would remain in use, and this wish will be fulfilled.

We are planning further development of the system and expansion to new properties in autumn 2026. We will inform residents in more detail as soon as the plans progress.

When the outdoor temperature rises significantly, it is important to try to keep the indoor temperature at a comfortable level using the available means. It is worth trying the following measures, for example:

• keeping blackout curtains or blinds closed when the sun is shining directly into the windows
• opening the balcony glazing so that the high temperature on the balcony does not affect the indoor temperature
• keeping the balcony door and windows closed when the outdoor air is warmer than the indoor air
• ventilating in the evening or at night, aiming to create a cross-breeze through the apartment
• using heat-generating household appliances or the apartment sauna with consideration during hot weather
• considering to get a fan or a cooler. For example, a damp towel from the freezer placed around you overnight or a bowl of ice cubes in front of a fan can work well for cooling.

Also remember to drink enough water during hot weather.

Recycling is an environmental act

Recycling and sorting are easy ways to do good. It’s a good idea to sort waste properly and make sure that garbage ends up in the right sorting bins and excess furniture ends up at the Sortti station. Sorting is also financially beneficial, as emptying a sorted waste container is cheaper than emptying a mixed waste container.

Avoid overfilling recycling containers—if they are full, it is best to wait for the next collection. This way, waste areas stay tidy, odors are under control and pests will be kept out of the yards.

Grilling safely and considering the neighbors

As the weather warms up, many people want to grill on their balconies or terraces. Grilling on a balcony is allowed with an electric grill, while gas grills may be used on terraces and private yards. Try to place the grill so that smoke does not drift onto a neighbor’s balcony or into their home.

Remember to place the grill on a flat and non-flammable surface, far enough away from buildings or other flammable materials. Do not leave the grill unattended. It is also a good idea to have a fire blanket near the grill.

Open fires are prohibited for fire safety reasons. Fire safety regulations must be followed at all times.

Bikes in place and walkways clear

Bicycles have their own storage spaces. To keep the yard areas clean and traffic smooth, please always take your bikes to the designated spaces. Storing bicycles in corridors or near entrances can hinder movement and cause dangerous situations.

Clear routes are especially important in an emergency, but also make everyday movement easier, for example with strollers or assistive devices.

When everyone pays attention to the above-mentioned things and considers their neighbors, we can all enjoy the summer in good spirits.

Properties participating in the pilot

The properties selected for the pilot vary in type and are located at the following addresses:

• Kankaretie 1
• Klaneettitie 9 / Sitratie 5

• Laajasuontie 32
• Paulankatu 2
• Pihkatie 6

During the pilot, laundry room slots will be reserved electronically instead of using the traditional reservation book or lock. The system identifies the person making the reservation based on their unique phone number.

We will collect residents’ experiences and feedback on the system during the pilot. This will help us assess whether the electronic reservation system should be adopted permanently.

Reserving a slot during the pilot

Once the pilot has started, a slot can be reserved in three ways:

1. Using an app installed on a smartphone (the primary method)
2. Via the service provider’s website, if a smartphone is not available
3. By calling the service provider’s customer service number, if a computer is not available

This means that all adult residents will still be able to make reservations regardless of the device they use.

The reservation calendar is open two months in advance. A resident may have up to two active reservations at a time. Available time slots run between 8am and 9pm. At the start of the pilot, traditional reservation books and locks will be discontinued.

More detailed instructions for adopting the pilot have been sent to the residents.

During the tour, the Sortti vehicles will accept, free of charge, hazardous waste generated by households as well as metal, electrical, and electronic scrap. Each waste type has its own dedicated truck to ensure that the materials are handled appropriately. Now is the perfect time to clear out any extra junk and waste from your home or basement that does not belong in mixed waste!

Hazardous waste includes, for example, energy-saving lamps, cleaning chemicals, paints, varnishes, adhesives, motor oils, and batteries.

Metal waste includes items such as bicycles, frying pans, drying racks, as well as metal containers and cans.

Electrical and electronic waste includes items such as washing machines, coffee makers, televisions, computers, mobile phones, and electric toothbrushes.

What cannot be taken to the spring Sortti tour?

Sortti vehicles do not accept:

• pressure-treated wood
• fireworks, explosives, or ammunition
• medicines
• large gas cylinders
• car tires

Make Recycling Easier at Home

Recycling is one of the simplest ways to save natural resources. When materials are properly sorted and reused, they can get a new life and their environmental impact is significantly reduced.

A few everyday tips:

• Keep sorting bins within easy reach so you’ll actually use them.
• Rinse packaging lightly with a small amount of water to prevent odors.
• Flatten packaging to save space at home and at collection points.
• By using recycling points, glass, metal, and cardboard can easily be sent on to their next life.

Christmas is coming, and we would like to remind you of a few things to ensure that everyone can enjoy a safe and pleasant holiday season.

• Open fires and candles: Please do not leave candles or open fires unattended. Remember to use non-flammable bases and place candles at a safe distance from flammable materials. Open fires are not allowed on balconies or in private yard areas.
• Electrical appliances: Please remember to switch off Christmas lights and other electrical appliances before going to bed or when no one is at home. Only lights intended for outdoor use may be used outdoors or on balconies. It is also worth checking that your home has a fire alarm with a working battery.
• Ham fat: Fat from cooking ham should not be poured down the drain. Hot ham fat is liquid, but when it cools down, it may block the pipes. Allow the fat to cool, for example in an empty milk can, and dispose of it as solidified bio-waste.
• Food scraps: Food scraps should also be disposed of in the bio-waste bin, not in the toilet or down the drain.
• Aluminium trays from Christmas dishes and cooking foil should be sorted into the metal recycling container.
• Gift wrapping: Gift wrapping paper and ribbons should be disposed of as mixed waste.
• Neighbours and pets: Please be considerate of neighbours and pets during Christmas and New Year, both in your own and your guests’ noise levels, as well as when using fireworks. Fireworks are not allowed on the property grounds. Remember to use appropriate safety equipment and clean up after yourself.

HSY will begin free Christmas tree collection in the Helsinki metropolitan area on 7 January 2026, and the collection will continue until the end of February. Trees must be placed outdoors in a visible location near the waste shelter or waste bins by 6 January at the latest, ensuring they do not block walkways or become covered by snow.

This recognition motivates us to keep pushing forward with environmentally friendly solutions. We continue to develop our practices, monitor their impact, and seek new ways to reduce our footprint. For us, environmental responsibility isn’t a one-time project – it’s a way of working.

This year’s competition focused on future-oriented renovation, emphasizing energy efficiency and energy self-sufficiency, reduction of carbon emissions, and opportunities for future energy savings.

Our project, Laajasuontie 32, received special praise from the jury for its consistent operating methods, well-considered repair strategy, and innovative solutions. In addition to a traditional plumbing renovation, we focused on improving the property’s energy efficiency and bringing the apartments up to modern standards. The building was equipped with geothermal heating, a heat recovery system, a solar power plant, and additional thermal insulation. Furthermore, the apartment layouts were upgraded from their original 1970s design to meet the needs of the 2020s.

According to the jury, our renovation project is an excellent example of a successful and competitive implementation that also serves as an inspiration for other housing companies to develop their operations in a more sustainable direction.
